I don’t want to buy expensive bags. What can I wrap food in to freeze it?

Leah replied:

Buying in bulk—picking up larger amounts of meat and other foods when they’re on sale—is a great way to stretch your dollars. But Jessica is right, it needs to be wrapped to keep air out and protect from freezer burn.

Try to wrap food tightly and use thick materials such as foil, heavy plastic bags or freezer paper. You can freeze meat or poultry in the supermarket wrapping, but it’s so thin it lets in air. Unless you will be using the food in a month or two, overwrap the packages with another layer such as heavy-duty foil or freezer wrap.

You can also wash and dry foil and plastic bags to use more than once. Or you can clean and repurpose packaging that other foods such as yogurt, margarine, bread or takeout meals came in. Avoid using packaging that can contaminate other foods, such as meat packaging.
