Unopened foods are often safe long after the date stamped on the package. In fact, a lot of good food is wasted because the dates can be confusing. Here’s what they mean:
- “Best By” or “Best Before” dates: Don’t just throw it out!
This is an estimate of when a product’s flavor and quality may be best. The product is still safe to eat, even though quality may start to fall a bit. Canned foods can be safe for a few years after the date shown, condiments last months longer than shown, and pasta can often be eaten a year out of date. - “Sell By” dates: Don’t just throw it out!
This is a date for the store to follow. Fresh foods must be sold by this date or removed from shelves. You’ll see this on dairy, eggs, meats, and packaged salads. Keep an eye out for any signs that the food has gone off before eating. - “Expiration” or “EXP” dates: Don’t use it. You’ll see this on baby formula, medicines and vitamins.
To know if a food is safe to eat, check for an off smell, color, flavor or texture. Note that a color change in meat doesn’t mean it’s bad—spoiled meat will also have an odor or feel sticky or slimy.
Of course, foods will last even longer when wrapped and frozen. So if you’re not going to eat fresh food right away, see if you can extend its life in the freezer.
