How-To: Sip Smarter

Seven ways with water

Make water work for you

If you don’t really love drinking water, or don’t like the taste of water in your area, here are 7 tips to try—and why.

How much water do you need? No matter what you’ve heard, there’s no hard and fast rule. Listen to your body. If you’re thirsty, drink.

Tip 1

DIY flavor

There’s no need to buy anything special—add what you have at home to regular water or seltzer

  • Slices of lemon, lime, apple, orange or cucumber
  • Sprigs of lemongrass or mint
  • Crushed watermelon or berries
  • A squirt of lemon or lime juice
  • A few drops of vanilla
  • A splash of 100% fruit juice

Tip 2

Brew it

Make your own coffee or herbal tea at home and enjoy it hot or over ice

Be thoughtful about added sugar, milk and creamer—those drive up the calories

Tip 3

Make it sparkle

If you have a home soda maker, add fizz to regular water—or mix seltzer with plain water to stretch it

Tip 4

Find your comfort zone

Some people like water ice cold, while others prefer it room temp or even hot

Experiment to see if a different temperature might work better for you

Tip 5

Filter it

If your local water doesn’t taste great to you, a countertop pitcher with a filter or one that attaches to the tap can help

These items may pay for themselves if you start drinking more water from home

Tip 6

Keep it handy

Have water on the table at every meal and nearby when working—if you start thinking about a snack, drink a glass to see if you’re just thirsty

Find the bottle that works best for you—do you prefer

  • A flip top, pull-up sports cap or screw top
  • Sipping or using a straw
  • Plastic, metal or glass
  • Insulated to keep things hot or cold

If you like your water bottle, you’ll use it!

Tip 7

Eat your water

Fruits and vegetables have high water content, so eating those will help keep you hydrated

Regular milk and fortified soy milk also contribute to your daily water—add berries, vanilla or cinnamon instead of buying high-sugar flavored brands
